Skin Types

Skin cancer is a serious disease and can be fatal if left untreated. There are a few different types of skin cancer, but they can be broken down into the main three types of skin cancer. Squamous Cell Carcinoma is usually found in parts of the body that are exposed to the sun like the ears, face and mouth. Symptoms are a bump that turns into an open sore, a bump that won’t heal and a bump that gets larger. Basal Cell Carcinoma, the most commonly developed of the types of skin cancer, found on the hands, neck and face, is treatable and rarely spreads to other body parts. Symptoms are open sore that oozes, a yellow or white area that looks like a scar and a pink pearly bump. Melanoma, the most dangerous of the skin cancer types, can start on any part of the body, although the arms, legs and trunk are most common. Symptoms are a mole, freckle or new spot that changes color in color and/or size. Protecting yourself from overexposure to the sunlight can help you avoid all 3 types of skin cancer.

Your risk of developing skin cancer depends in large part on your skin type. In 1975, Fitzpatrick, a highly respected dermatologist developed a measure for classifying people according to their skin color and tanning and burning response when exposed to sunlight. This test is known as the Fitzpatrick skin types test.

There are different skin types and they should be treated as such:

Acne-prone Skin
Aging Skin
Combination Skin
Dry Skin
Normal Skin
Oily Skin
Red Skin
Sensitive Skin

Oily skin types are a problem that many teenagers suffer from. Years ago, it was believed to be caused by greasy foods and too much chocolate. Today, many dermatologists will give creams to help with an oily skin type.

Types of skin conditions like dermatitis, acne, and contact urticaria at best can be very annoying, worrisome and stressful. Most of these types of skin disorders can be treated with proper care and the correct soaps, creams or lotions. Hives, eczema, insect bites, heat rash, viral illness (chicken pox etc) are all types of skin rashes. Sometimes it is necessary to clearly describe what kind of skin rash types you have before your doctor can help take care of it. Some skin disorders are a form of skin fungus. There are also different types of skin fungus.

Skin grafts can be used to help us when one part of the body needs skin from another part. Skin grafts are used many times with burn victims. There are several types of skin grafts. Which one is used is determined by different factors with the largest factor being what part of the body is getting the graft.
